Picasso Museum, Barcelona
Though born in the southern costal town of Málaga, Pablo Ruiz Picasso spent his formative years in Barcelona. The Picasso Museum, then, appropriately houses rare early works from the artist while highlighting his relationship with the city. It is Barcelona's most visited museum.
Most visitors come away surprised by Picasso's early drawings: the precision and realistic representation displayed in these works have nothing to do with his signature Cubist forms. Nevertheless, later periods are present, notably the Blue Period and the Las Meninas series, a reinterpretation of Velazquez's masterpiece held in Madrid's Prado Museum. If you're interesting in obtaining a broad understanding of Picasso's evolution as an artist, this is the place to do it.
